For many people meditation, or guided focus, can be the key to restful sleep. Meditation affects us in many ways: it can slow the mind, bringing our alpha waves to a rate that more closely matches our heartbeat, creating a synergy and harmony that can lull us into a relaxed state.
Meditation also gives us opportunity to process and release the challenges of the day, calming the mind. Many who suffer from insomnia and restless sleep agree that those restless times are always accompanied by the worries of the day. Meditation is one of the best tools for restoring flow within the mind. Just as that slowing of the brainwaves aids us in relaxing, we can also promote restful thinking by letting go of problems, or at least setting them aside during our slumber hours.
There are many forms of meditation, and with anything else it takes practice to master these techniques. Classes are available at many locations, or as teleclasses. CD’s and DVD’s are another option, for a guided process you can use anytime.
