Is self motivation really that important? On a whole, the importance of self motivation is still neglected by many people even though there are plenty of resources on motivation that are easily available, such as books, courses, seminars etc.
We are just too busy dealing with life and never spare any time thinking about motivating ourselves. It’s not just that, some people strongly believe that they do not need any motivation. For them it’s like “Of course I’m motivated. Who doesn’t want to be successful? Who doesn’t want to be financially, emotionally and spiritually rich?”
However, that low level of motivation is really actually only a kind of wishful thinking. It’s not enough. It’s like saying you want something to happen, but you’re not willing to commit to make it happen. There’s a big difference between wishful thinking, and being totally committed.
When everything is going well, of course we feel that there isn’t much need for self motivation. However, when things aren’t going so well, when bad things happen, the importance of motivation becomes apparent. The value of having strong self motivation shines through during times of crisis.
Take for example, when a person suffers a major setback. Let’s say he has just lost all his money, reputation etc. What will happen if he has low self motivation? How would he react? If he has weak self motivation, he would probably go through a lot of emotional suffering and depression. He would have wasted a lot of precious time and his health probably will deteriorate as well.
Compare that with people who have strong self motivation. Many of those negative reactions will never happen. If you have strong self motivation, no matter what happens you will be focused on turning things around and coming back stronger. Instead of feeling miserable and sorry for yourself whenever you face setbacks, why not have self motivation.
Another important reason for self motivation is it pushes us to improvement, to make strides and progress. Imagine what our world would be like if none of the scientists, inventors or engineers had the motivation to bring and create various technological advancements to humankind.
The reason these individuals keep trying, keep believing, and not give up despite the difficulties and setbacks is because of their self motivation. Without motivation they would not have been able to make their vision become a reality.
The importance of motivation is clear. Motivation is the one thing that keeps us going when the going gets tough. When we feel like giving up; when we feel lazy; when we feel frustrated, it is motivation that pulls us through.
