Glass Block Showers – Experience The Luxury

When my spouse and I went to Poland, we were bowled over by the loveliness of their glass block showers.

We wanted to get that same contemporary feel in our home.

Envision no smelly, mildewy shower curtain. As an alternative, envision the intense light of a shower made entirely of glass blocks. No need to be anxious with privacy, the glass blocks are made of “wavy” glass, which allows the light in but doesn’t allow that “see through” experience. Throw away your costly cleaning products, glass block showers are simple to maintain and require no special treatments. Your bathroom will feel lighter and larger, and you’ll have that luxurious glass block beauty.

Glass block will improve your home value as well as beautify your home. Glass block can also provide many years of trouble-free service.

With the advent of the building and supply store, all the provisions you’ll need can be found. Pick up your glass block, as well as the starter panels and plastic spacing pieces there. The store will also have detailed directions, easy to follow for even the most timid do-it-yourself person.

If you can butter a slice of bread, you can do this. After all, placing mortar on a glass block is very similar to buttering bread!

The most difficult part is just designing what you want your modern shower to look like. You can find scores of pictures of glass block showers on the internet, or you can find books with different design ideas at the building supply store. Even the manufacturers have put together some easy – but striking – designs to help you picture your glass block masterwork.

Shower designs can include the plain, where a shower bottom pan is surrounded on one or a few sides by glass block. If you want to go more complex, try the specialty blocks that curve. These can be particularly inspiring since they can prevent water from reaching the floor. Blocks can be placed all the way to the ceiling, while other people have chosen to use a few blocks to accent an area.

When my husband suggested the idea of glass block, I already had my heart set on a jacuzzi bathtub. Not to worry, glass block being multipurpose, we ended up using a combination of glass blocks around the tub to enclose a waterfall shower combination. I’ve never seen another like it, which is the point, isn’t it?

To complete your new bathroom project, you want to remember to coat the mortar joints of your glass block shower on both sides with a clear silicone or acrylic sealant to guard against mold and mildew. Do this at least a week after you lay your shower walls to allow the mortar to cure properly.

The next step is to invite your friends over. You’ll want to take the recognition, of course, but don’t let on how simple the whole thing really was – after all, they may want to hire you to come over and create their new glass block shower masterpiece!
