Watching someone achieve their goal and come to victory is one of the most joyfullest moments a coach can have. However it is not always like this, I also see many of my clients run for the finish line only to fail miserably. What is the difference? Why is that some people seem to succeed without effort while others struggle? As a coach I have noticed a few common threads over the years and this is what I have discovered.
We are more likely to fall short if we aren’t personally connected to the goal. For example, let’s say that your goal is to earn $1 Million next year. Great! But, why is that important to you personally; what will change as a result of reaching that goal; what bigger goals are you trying to reach here? I find that when you don’t connect the underlying goal to the numeric or quantifiable goal, it is harder to stay on track.
Make sure the goal you are striving for is something you want to achieve and not just something someone else told you to do. For example if you are trying to lose weight to make your spouse happy you will most likely not have the strength and motivation to follow through when the times get tough, which they usually do.
Whether you achieve a goal or not lies a lot on your belief system, if your goal is too big to truly believe it will happen it will be hard to achieve it. For example starting at zero and aiming to earn 1 million dollars the following year is a big leap, not impossible, just a big leap. Chunk things down to smaller steps, like the joke goes ‘how do you eat an elephant? one bite at a time’.
Success leaves traces, the fastest way to success is to model someone else who has already succeed in that area. Write your goals out, tell the world you are here to succeed and stay focused. To your success.
