Lobelia: The Herbal Approach to Relaxation

Lobelia is one of the most potent and powerful healing herbs, according to many sources.   Used in the form of a tincture, lobelia can be applied to the skin for aches and pains, and to the low back or base of the skull to aid relaxation.   In The Encyclopedia of Pure Materia Medica the list of uses for Lobelia goes on for pages.  It’s not advised to ingest lobelia, for it is known as pokeweed, and will likely induce vomiting.

One of my favorite uses of Lobelia is to put several drops on a cloth and breath in the aroma as I drift off to sleep.  This method is a type of aromatherapy. The relaxing qualities of lobelia can be felt through the entire body.    Rubbing lobelia tincture or extract on the shoulders of a restless child is an excellent way to help him go to sleep.

Lobelia is also known for its restorative powers for the lungs.  This plant is known as Indian Tobacco, and contains a substance similar to nicotine.  Lobelia soothes and calms the body in many ways, and has been used for centuries by many.
