Heart diseases are mainly caused by high cholesterol and many people die every year of heart diseases. There are many causes to heart disease but many times a heart disease is caused by high cholesterol. Preventing a heart disease starts with regular testing of cholesterol levels.

Many people may believe that that there is only one type of cholesterol, but there are actually two types of cholesterol which includes one that is bad and one that is good. All types of cholesterol are not bad for you.
The first type of cholesterol is LDL. This is the bad type and you need to ensure that your LDL cholesterol levels are as low as possible. This cholesterol type builds up in the walls of the artery and can cause blockage to your arteries. This build up of cholesterol in you arteries causes your heart to work harder than what it is supposed to.
Various heart diseases and even heart attacks are caused by high LDL cholesterol levels. When your LDL cholesterol levels are higher, the risk of getting a heart attack is much higher than any other type of heart disease.
HDL Cholesterol is the other type of cholesterol which is the good type of cholesterol. Basically this is a molecule that has proteins in its composition. The HDL cholesterol actually helps fighting and breaking off the bad cholesterol in a persons body.
You can test your cholesterol by doing a blood test. If you do not know what your cholesterol count is, it is best you visit you general practitioner and let him do a blood test. Especially men in the early forties and onwards should have their cholesterol levels checked on a regular basis.
If you find that you do have a high LDL cholesterol count, you need to do some exercises and also start eating a healthier diet, which can help you to lower your cholesterol. Such a diet should consist of a healthy eating plan and should definitely exclude animal fats and dairy products.
Eating habits can let you eat unhealthy foods and you do not even recognize it anymore. Make an effort of eating healthier and make sure that you know how much fat you are taking in. Start looking for products which indicates that they are low in fat or even fat free. These products will assist you in your low cholesterol diet.
